Sarajevans Say
The beautiful city of Sarajevo was under siege by the Army of Republika Srpska for 1, 425 days, three times longer than the Battle of Stalingrad. Their neighbors were trying to kill them. The city streets became littered with “Sarajevo Roses,” which are mortar damage in the streets filled with red wax, producing a rose-like effect. During the larger conflict that included the siege of Sarajevo, in July of 1995, 8000 men and boys were massacred in Srebrenica, a so-called UN safe zone, by units of the Serbian army while the United Nations looked on. As a result, Bosnians, including Sarajevans, began to refer to the U.N. not as the United Nations, but “United Nothing.” At the Museum Of Crimes Against Humanity And Genocide 1992 -1995 you can purchase a “United Nothing” tee-shirt. I did purchase one.

When spy planes flew
In late July
Soil’d been turned
And all knew why
Johnny says convoy
Ain’t gonna make it through
Bungled talks and
United nothing
He depends on me and you
Saravevans say
Ummm No No
No No
Ummm No No
Saravevans say
Ummm No No
No No
Ummm No No
United Nothing
United Nothing
Johnny say the bombers cannot see you
Through the hazy haze
This is it boys
We got hours
Not days
Saravevans say
Ummm No No
United Nothing
UN policy
Impartiality
Guilty
An accessory
United Nothing
United Nothing
Early success and little resistance
They filled the ditches with men and boys
At Hotel Moscow they shrug and sniff now
Shut your mouth boy don’t need you noise
UN policy of
Impartiality
Guilty
An accessory
